I bought this shredder a while ago at Costco, but I was so behind on my shredding that I put off opening it and using it for the past several months. The last two days I have been using this thing at its limit (6 mins on and 30 mins off as specified in the owner’s manual although the back of the unit says 3 mins on 25 off) while making sure that the basket didn’t (usually) get too full. Anyway, I have produced 9 paper grocery bags worth of shreddings so far, and the unit is still going strong. I like that I can put in most unopened envelopes, and I’m pretty sure that I’ve exceeded the 12 sheet specification at times. I’ve pretty much been abusing this machine for the past two days (I even tried to shred a CD which doesn’t work btw… don’t try it). I’ve had a few paper jams (always from feeding in too much at once) that were pretty easy to unjam.

Why did I give this unit three stars if it’s been preforming like a champ?

Because it has a fatal design flaw that I had to fix. Fixing it was a real pain in the rear. After about the 5th or sixth cycle of shredding, I noticed the motor started sounding different. Like the paranoid person I am, I decided to investigate. It turns out that there is a crack between the metal support structure for the blades and the plastic casing. I had to take the shredder apart and remove paper shreddings that were starting to get into the motor and starting to clog the exhaust (cooling) vent. This process took about an hour. I put the shredder back together and used electrical tape to cover the crack, and I have had no further problems. But I SHOULDN’T HAVE HAD TO DO THIS. If you have this shredder, do yourself a favor and while you are assembling it and fix the crack with electrical tape or the shredder will most likely live a very short life.

I read the poor review on this shredder after purchasing for $49 at Costco, and figured I would end up taking it back. One review said it would only do 3-4 pages at a time so did that. Then tried 5, then 7, then 8, no problems. It was quiet and efficient. I just grab a handful and shred. It rolls easily and the basket is compact 3.5 gallons but fits our purposes and easy to take out. There was a 14 page 5 gallon shredder at Costco for $90 but it was too large and too obvious a shredder. I am replacing an 11 page fellows shredder from Oct 2007 that burned out and prefer this one.

I have abused this machine! My old shredder broke and we just started putting our things in bags and placing them in the closet in the guest room. I had every intention of buying a new one but just never got around to it. Finally, I bought one at Costco. I paid 49.00 for this machine there and it was worth that and then some! I shredded all 3 trash bags in one day in just a couple of sittings. I only stopped the first time because the machine overheated after about 2 bags. I had to let it cool down and it started working again, thankfully. Anyway I finished all 3 bags that day and it has worked like a charm ever since. It also does credit cards like a charm. Just put them directly down the middle as instructed and it works like a charm. I am so glad that I bought this machine.
